Klondike Comedy Winner

Earlier this summer, Klondike (@Klondikebar) invited Twitter users nationwide to participate in the first-ever Klondike Comedy Showcase, a joke writing competition hosted on Twitter by stand-up comedian/ Twitter phenom Rob Delaney (@robdelaney). After 11 hilarious weeks and nearly 10,000 entries, Pauly Casillas (@PaulyPeligroso) has been named champion.

Casillas won the Week 5 joke category, “Worst Pick-Up Lines,” to achieve finalist status and go head-to-head with the nine other weekly finalists from across the nation. It was Casillas’ joke in the final round – ”What would you do for a Klondike bar?” – where he claimed his title as the Klondike king of 140-character comedy. Though not a comedy pro quite yet, Casillas is well on his way to making a name for himself as an established comedian. Well known in the online comedy space with nearly 90,000 Twitter followers, Casillas also performs stand-up comedy, taking the stage to hone his skills as often as he can.

As part of the grand-prize package, Casillas will receive an all-expense-paid VIP trip to the New York Comedy Festival in November, where he’ll get to hang out with Rob Delaney, who will be performing at the Festival. Delaney’s show starts at 7:30 p.m. EST on Monday, Nov. 12 at the NYU Skirball Center in lower Manhattan.

Universal Seeking New Talent for Pitch Perfect Music Video

Universal Pictures announced today that it has begun the search for new talent to appear in “Starships,” the official music video for Pitch Perfect, the studio’s upcoming musical comedy that hits theaters on October 5. With the chance to join the film’s cast and Internet music sensation Mike Tompkins in the video, amateur musicians and dancers are encouraged to submit their best vocals; signature moves; beatbox; and/or guitar, bass, synth and back-up sounds to accompany this cover of Nicki Minaj’s worldwide smash.

With multiple options for participation, fans may submit their entries at www.pitchperfectmovie.com/musicvideo. Those selected for the project will have their video showcased on both the Blu-ray DVD of Pitch Perfect and Tomkins’ YouTube channel, which currently has more than 550,000 subscribers.

“Pitch Perfect celebrates everyone out there who is following his or her true passion,” said the film’s director, Jason Moore. “Mike Tompkins embodies passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be able to partner with him on this project. I can’t wait to watch the undiscovered talent that I know we’ll find.”

“When Universal approached me with the idea to make a video for Pitch Perfect, I knew it would be a fun partnership,” noted Tompkins. “Making music has driven me since I was a kid, and I know there are many others out there who love it as much as I do. I’m looking forward to seeing what we are able to create together.”

This is the first time Tompkins has collaborated with filmmakers, talent and a studio on the official music video for a movie. Tompkins, represented by Maker Studios—a next-generation talent-first music company—is best known for creating his own unique twist on music covers using only his voice and mouth. As his popularity rose, he was noticed by some of the biggest names in entertainment and has since collaborated as a producer and writer with Timbaland and been featured on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, NBC’s TODAY show and PerezHilton.com, among others. Tompkins and Alana Da Fonseca arranged this new a cappella version of “Starships,” which was written by Nicki Minaj, RedOne, Carl Falk, Rami Yacoub and Wayne Hector.

All submissions must be received by August 22, 2012. Please visit www.pitchperfectmovie.com/musicvideo for entry details and terms and conditions.

About Pitch Perfect

Beca (Anna Kendrick) is that girl who’d rather listen to what’s coming out of her headphones than what’s coming out of you. Arriving at her new college, she finds herself not right for any clique but somehow is muscled into one that she never would have picked on her own: alongside mean girls, sweet girls and weird girls whose only thing in common is how good they sound when they sing together, in the new out-loud comedy Pitch Perfect.

When Beca takes this acoustic singing group out of their world of traditional arrangements and perfect harmonies into all-new mash-ups, they fight to climb their way to the top of the cutthroat world of college music competitions. This could wind up either the coolest thing they’ll ever do or the most insane, and it will probably be a little of both.

Loaded with new takes on old favorites to hits of right now that are seamlessly mixed together, mashed-up and arranged like you’ve never heard before, Pitch Perfect is directed by Jason Moore, who opened our eyes to the very misbehaved life of puppets in the surprise Broadway sensation Avenue Q. www.pitchperfectmovie.com

Comedy Central Roseanne Roast Details

ROSEANNE BARR IS THE GATEWAY DRUG FOR UNACCEPTABLE ISSUES ON TV (GLBT, FAT, DYSFUNCTION, PRO-MARIJUANA) WOULD SHE DO THE SAME FOR THE COUNTRY IF SHE WERE PRESIDENT?

before the action
Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne was Live at the Hollywood Palladium August 4, 2012. Comic Bible Host Tamara Henry covered the event.

The red carpet was packed with stars out to roast or see Roseanne be skewered with laughs. On the red carpet roasters prepared; the running joke was "WHAT THE HELL IS THE COMIC BIBLE!!??"

Inside, the stage was set to look like the house on "Roseanne". Roseanne, who wreaked of marijuana, looked simply stunning in her silver chiffon and frosted silver hair, and her smile was magical throughout the entire show.
Sharon Stone was a no show, Ellen Barkin was her replacement.
"Sons of Anarchy" Matriarch Katy Sagal, Alicia Goranson gave a great display of comedic timing and the use of orchestrated silence. The brunt of the lowest and meanest jokes fell on Wayne Brady and Amy Schumer and Carrie Fisher. At the end Tom Arnold made a surprise appearance after not being in the same room with Roseanne for 18 years. Tom's voice sounded like David Letterman and he told Roseanne she was his Johnny Carson. The show ended with a climactic comical ending from Gilbert Gottfried and a standing ovation as a redemptive Roseanne successfully sang the last two lines of the National Anthem.
The last roast was Charlie Sheen and this roast was like Politically Incorrect meets the Vagina Monologues. A must see show on Sunday August 12th at 10pm on Comedy Central.

Look for more from the red carpet on Comic Bible TV and more details of the event in the next issue of COMIC BIBLE MAGAZINE.

Fox Short-Com Comedy Hour Means New Opportunities for Comics

FOX will launch THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR in Summer 2013, building on television’s rich past to reinvent comedy for the future. Both a contemporary spin on multi-camera comedy and an alternative development platform, THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR will feature four unique short-form sitcoms – or “short-coms” – in a fast-paced hour-long broadcast. Each short-com will feature both established and up-and-coming actors and comedians in one-act scenes, creating a comedy showcase brimming with today’s best, brightest and freshest voices.

“We are basically ripping open the traditional scripted comedy development process with THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR,” said Kevin Reilly, President of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “Our end goal is to provide distinct comedy voices with a world-class platform to experiment, grow and perfect their ideas and to hopefully build them into mainstream comedy hits in the future. We’re looking forward to seeing what the untapped comedy community has to offer.”

The short-com development process will be as distinct as the end result, featuring hand-picked talent from the world of stand-up comedy. In an effort to open up the traditional development process, FOX will facilitate a creatively open environment for comedy talent to hone their voices and material within the context of their self-produced short-coms.

In addition to airing them as part of THE SHORT-COM COMEDY HOUR, FOX will commission the most fully realized of these scripted vignettes to series, helping to seed the future of the FOX multi-camera brand.

They are currently scouting in Montreal at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival.

Seinfeld Announces NYC Tour

JERRY SEINFELD BACK ON THURSDAY NIGHTS THIS FALL
A SPECIAL NEW YORK CITY FIVE-BOROUGH TOUR
Tickets on Sale Monday, July 30 at 10 am

For the first time in 14 years, Jerry Seinfeld is presenting full performances of his signature stand-up comedy in New York City.  Seinfeld will perform five stand-up shows – one in each New York City borough – on five Thursday nights this Fall.

Seinfeld, a New York native, got his start as a comedian in the City in the 1970s, but other than appearing at benefits and occasional short sets at local comedy clubs, he has not performed a full show in a NYC theater since his sold-out Broadway engagement, “I’m Telling You For The Last Time,” at the Broadhurst Theater in 1998, shortly after the final episode of his iconic TV show, Seinfeld.

" I was born in Brooklyn, went to school in Queens and started out as a comedian in Manhattan. I feel like New York City taught me how to be funny. I'm so excited to perform a special series of shows for my beloved home town," said Seinfeld.

Seinfeld’s five-borough performances will all fall on Thursday nights – the same as the television show that bore his name – and will feature special guest Colin Quinn, who Seinfeld directed in the hit Broadway show “Colin Quinn: Long Story Short” at the Helen Hayes Theater in 2010-11.

Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me

In theatre on August 24 is Mike Birbiglia's film SLEEPWALK WITH ME.

The latest issue of Comic Bible has the story of IFC Films acquiring North American rights and multiple foreign territories to 'Sleepwalk With Me', the directorial debut of comedian Mike Birbiglia. The film premiered to critical acclaim at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and was the winner of the Best of NEXT Audience Award. Birbiglia and Ira Glass of WBEZ Chicago's This American Life's produced the film along with Jacob Jaffke. Birbiglia also stars in the film alongside Lauren Ambrose, James Rebhorn, Carol Kane, Cristin Milioti, and Aya Cash.

Sleepwalk With Me

Comic Bible Correspondent Zach Bratkovich attended the press premiere:

Many interviews with comics talk about how important it is for a comedian to “find their voice” and be real on stage. This movie is Mike’s story of his journey to reaching that point. Mike Birbiglia’s film Sleepwalk with Me is a great story of how an artist, particularly a comedian, matures and grows in their craft. A lot of what drives us is our life experience and how we interact with it because of who we are. This movie does a great job of encapsulating the experience of a struggling artist/comedian and how those experiences shaped Mike into who he is both as a person and as a comedian
Mike is a great story teller as a comedian and that really translated well to the big screen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I found it to be both funny and touching. The acting was very good with a solid cast behind the film and the flow of the film was unique but easy to follow. Mike narrates the film from his car from time to time which really added to the overall feel of the movie.
This is definitely a movie every comedian who wants to “go pro” should see. The part of the movie that shows Mike’s experience with working the road and starting his career is a pretty clear picture of what comedians should expect. The struggles he faces in different clubs and shows and the stress of the road really does a great job showing the audience the reality of what every comic thinks they want: The life of a working act. It’s definitely a tough long road between doing $100 shows 6 hours away and having your name on the Marquee of the Chicago Theater. This film is a definite must see that’s ability to touch the audience goes beyond those in the comedy industry.

If bite-sized chicken can grow up, so can you!  COMEDY CENTRAL has teamed up with KFC to create the original digital series and contest “Growing Up and Getting Out.”  Launching today, the five episode web series taps into the growing numbers of millennials (1 in 4) who are moving back home to live with their parents.  The partnership also launches a socially-fuelled contest that asks fans each week to share pictures and stories on freerentcontest.com that express the humorous side of living at home with their parents.  At the end of the campaign (July 17 – August 20), five winners will receive ‘rent for the year’ in the amount of $12,000 cash.  Winners will also receive an additional $500 in cash and $600 in KFC Chicken Checks redeemable for Original Recipe Bites or other KFC products to cater a moving out party.  Winners will be encouraged to give $100 of the Chicken Checks to their parents in celebration of “Growing Up and Getting Out.”
The digital original “Growing Up and Getting Out” features a talented cast from stand-up, improv and sketch comedy.  The series, which launched on July 17 (freerentcontest.com), revolves around Michael (played by comedian Michael Palascak) and chronicles funny moments as he adjusts to moving back home with his parents (played by comedians Dave Koechner [“The Office,” “Anchorman”] and Mo Collins [“MADtv”]).  Rounding out the cast are Alexis Knapp (“Project X”) as Michael’s date, Allyn Rachel as his sister, Daveo Mathias as his friend and “The League’s” Steve Rannazissi as the series host.  Each week, the series will capture the drama, tensions and funny moments between at-home millennials and their parents – Homecoming (July 17); Dinner (July 23); Chores (July 30); Date (August 6) and Video Games (August 13).

Laugh Factory Goes PlayStation

Millions of gamers to receive free laughs via Laugh Factory’s application available exclusively on PlayStation 3 (PS3™)

The PlayStation Nation can now watch the world’s first online comedy club and access rich archive of legendary standup comedy

The Laugh Factory today announced that the Laugh Factory LIVE application will be available exclusively in the U.S. and Canada for the PlayStation 3 (PS3™) system. Hollywood’s famed Laugh Factory has presented the titans of American comedy for the past three decades including Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Russell Peters, Dane Cook, Rodney Dangerfield and Jerry Seinfeld and now, they are bringing the experience right into living rooms across the country via PlayStation Network. The application will be free until December 1 and then available, for only ten cents per day.  Features include the ability to sort by comedian, by date, or catch an actual live performance just as if users were sitting in the famous Hollywood venue.
There have been many medical studies to the benefits of laughter to your health, including studies at the University of Maryland Medical Center regarding how laughter may prevent heart disease.  Researchers at Loma Linda University discovered that laughter appears to beneficially affect the body’s hormones. “The benefits of laughter are similar to exercise,” says lead researcher Lee Berk of Loma Linda University. “Laughter has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Blood pressure is lowered overall and resting heart rate decreases.  Additionally the immune system appears to get tuned up.” In short, he says, “We should become more serious about laughter.”

"We are thrilled that SCEA is providing its millions of PS3 gamers with the gift of laughter,” says LAUGH FACTORY founder and owner Jamie Masada. “Not only are they going to access to some of the best comedy in the world on a nightly basis but, PS3 owners now will be able to improve their daily lives and health through laughter. After all, it's accessible to everyone with a PS3, doesn't care about pre-existing conditions and it's a LOT cheaper!"

"We’re constantly looking for new ways to expand the digital entertainment offerings across PlayStation Network, and we’re thrilled to be the first game console to deliver this unique application to our community. PS3 gamers now have a chance to encounter – and enjoy – a live stream of some of the best of stand-up comedy directly from the Hollywood stage renowned for producing top quality entertainment during the past 30 years," says Phil Rosenberg, SVP, Strategic Business Development for SCEA.

The entire PlayStation Network will now be able to watch full standup shows on the legendary stage that has been the scene of the nation’s most recognized events including Dave Chappelle performing for over 6 hours straight to Michael Richards and Daniel Tosh’s controversial performances.

Customers can access Laugh Factory LIVE on their PS3 system for free by installing the app directly from the TV/Video Services category on the XMB (XrossMediaBar). The Laugh Factory LIVE app can also be found in the PlayStation®Store, under the Media & Apps category. For more information on how to get started, visit www.LaughFactory.com/PS3. Starting September 1, PS3 gamers will be able to watch live comedy performances and access a rich archive of standup comedy on PlayStation Network, streamed directly to their PS3.
